Extended Producer Responsibility

 EPR will be introduced in 2023 as part of the government’s commitment to change the current waste packaging legislation. 

• The legislation covers all packaging types that are not covered by existing deposit return schemes and aims to encourage producers to design packaging that is easier to recycle.  
• Additional data will need to be collected and reported
• Data reporting requirements will become more complex
• Modulated fees apply depending on recyclability of plastic, so fees will be lower for producers whose packaging contributes positively to scheme targets, whilst there are higher fees for packaging that does not positively contribute. This will further motivate producers to reduce their use of plastic packaging, or create a more environmentally friendly alternative. 
• Depending on the type of packaging the producer uses, the costs of the scheme could be significantly different to current costs.
